Spa-Inspired Tips to Beat the Winter Blues

Winter can be a beautiful time of year, especially when freshly fallen snow blankets the ground and makes the air crisp.

As lovely as it is, darkness sets in much earlier in the winter, the temperatures are cold, and sunlight seldom appears. Production of serotonin, known as the “happy hormone”, is triggered by warmth and sunlight, two of which we see less frequently during the winter.

Occasionally feeling down is a normal part of life. During these moments, it’s important to press pause for a little self-reflection and ask yourself:

  • Do I need some time for myself?
  • Am I overworked?
  • Do I need time with friends and family?

When life gets busy, we often put our own needs last, but it’s usually when we need time for ourselves the most.

Here are some spa-inspired tips to take time for yourself and beat the winter blues.

Your Time To…Brighten Your Environment

In winter, the early darkness can make a day appear dark and gloomy. Compensate for the lack of light by filling your space with warm, cozy lighting. Those who are affected with seasonal affective disorder (SAD), a form of depression associated with the changing of the seasons, are often treated with light therapy.

Ditch electronic-induced blue lighting for red, amber, or yellow light. You can get this by swapping your LED light bulbs to incandescent (there are even amber lights specifically made for helping with SAD).

Alternatively, lighting some candles and getting cozy always does the trick too!

Your Time to…Disconnect

In an earlier blog, we discussed the importance of taking some time to unplug and disconnect. In a day and age where our phones exist almost as an extension of ourselves, we often rely on our phones for entertainment. How easy it is when we are feeling bored or lonely to pick up our phone and browse social media?

Taking the time to step away from our phones once in a while allows us to remain present and decreases stress and loneliness.

Your Time To…Connect With Nature and Get Moving

During the winter, we often spend a lot more time indoors because of the colder weather. While there’s nothing wrong with cozying up under a warm blanket with some tea, it’s just as important to remain active.

Physical activity is crucial when trying to avoid and fight the winter blues. Exercise releases endorphins and improves energy levels. Getting outside and breathing in some fresh air has been scientifically proven to hold many benefits, such as improving memory and mood, increasing energy levels, and fighting depression and anxiety.

Your Time to…Reduce Stress

The first few months of a new year can be busy, especially if you are trying to stick to New Year’s resolutions. Maybe things have picked up a bit at work or you’re trying to juggle between work responsibilities with family life.

Stress hormones trigger a “fight or flight” response in the body, and when activated consistently, can lead to negative health effects. Stress can have many adverse health effects on your body, including headaches, a weakened immune system, and high blood pressure.

In some cases, a bit of short-term stress can be beneficial, but ongoing stress is detrimental to your health.

Some tips to reduce stress include:

  • Get more sleep.
  • Reduce caffeine consumption when you’re feeling stressed. Replace caffeinated beverages with water or herbal teas.
  • Get some physical activity
  • Learn when to say “no.” There’s only so much time in a day. Learning when to say no to requests will help you manage your time much more effectively and reduce your stress.
  • Talk to someone about what’s causing your stress. Working through things with a family member, a friend or a professional can help put your problems in perspective.
  • Practice relaxation techniques. Meditation, deep breathing, and remaining present are all ways to help with relaxation.
