Our Finnish spa is designed around the goal of achieving complete relaxation for our guests. Every aspect of our spa’s design and work culture has been carefully designed to contribute to this goal. However, goal-setting isn’t just important for professional achievement. It’s also a vital aspect of everyday self-care, but it’s frequently overlooked in favour of a warm bath or face mask (and to be clear, those are good methods for self-care, too!).
Here at Vettä Nordic Spa, we’re entering the home stretch of preparing the spa for your visit. This is when all of our hard work begins to come together, and it’s rewarding to see. Since we’ve been on this journey for ourselves, we thought it would be fun to share our tips for goal-setting and achievement with you.
Whether you want to become a rockstar at your job or a more well-rounded person, unlocking the key to your goals won’t just help you achieve them; it can also help you feel happier and healthier every day.
Why are Goals Important for Self-Care?
When you achieve a goal that you’ve set, you affirm to yourself that not only are you capable of seeing something through, no matter how big or small, but that you can make yourself feel happier by doing it. Making and sticking to set goals is also correlated with lower rates of depression and anxiety. You’re also more likely to adopt healthier methods of daily behavior, which can help you do everything from eating better to think more positively about daily tasks.
However, achieving a goal has a much more profound, long-lasting impact on your brain. As you pursue these goals, you effectively train your brain on how to stay focused and assess risks to the goal in front of you, making it much easier and more likely that you’ll achieve a decided goal in the future.
How to Decide Which Goals are Most Important
The trick to setting goals that will get your brain geared up for long-term success is to choose goals that have high emotional significance to you. To get things started, ask yourself why you want to set specific goals. What is the desired outcome for all of them? For some people, it may be to become more successful at work. For others, it may be to develop a better self-perception. Whatever your main reason for starting to track goals, keep it in mind as you break down the goal into smaller, more manageable chunks.
Let’s say that your goal is to feel healthier because you know that when you feel healthy, you’re generally happier. Your goals can start small and work towards larger achievements, so your to-do list might look like this:
- Eat a banana every day
- Meditate for five minutes every day
- Go for a 30-minute walk every other day
- Begin exercising for at least 30 minutes a day
- Learn and make 5 healthy dinner recipes every week
- Meal-prep healthy meals for the whole week on Sunday
Each one builds on the one before it, so when you achieve the first task, you’ll feel more confident and better empowered to take on the next goal.
How to Achieve Your Goals
Setting goals is challenging enough, but keeping yourself accountable and motivated can be even more challenging. There are plenty of apps out there to help gamify and track your goals, making them fun and rewarding to complete. You can create a weekly chart to track your progress, or simply write down a sentence stating what you want to achieve that day when you wake up in the morning.
Once you have a system set up, keep at it! Check in with yourself at the end of every week to see how you’re doing, and make changes to your routine or priorities if necessary.
What to Do if You Lose Track of Your Goals
If you’ve fallen off the Resolution Wagon, you’re not alone. It’s estimated that about 80% of people have either stopped pursuing or given up their New Year’s resolutions by the end of February. Pick up where you left off, and just keep going. Remember the main “why” reason that you set out to achieve these goals in the first place. Is that reason still important to you? What will you gain by achieving it?
When you’ve got your second wind, you’re ready to keep going. So go for it!
Taking Some Time for You at a Finnish Spa
