Our Finnish Spa Secret for Glowing Skin

One of the easiest ways to instantly feel and look your best is to take care of your skin. After all, it’s the largest organ in your body, and it’s constantly exposed to the elements of the world. However, with all the 10-step beauty care routines and the specialized products, it’s hard to find a regimen that actually works and that you can keep track of during your busy day.

Vettä is a Finnish spa, which means that we are built around traditional Finnish wisdom on how best to look after your body – and yes, that includes skincare. Winter can be a rough time for your skin, so today, we’re going to pull back the curtain on our spa’s secrets to achieving glowing skin. In no time at all, you’ll feel refreshed, hydrated, and ready to stun the world with your smile.

Let’s dive in!

First and Foremost, Think Hydration

You might not have any issues with dry skin in the summer, when the days are warm and the average air humidity is around 50%, but in the winter, it can be hard for your skin to get the hydration it craves. Start with a clean face, and try to use a cleansing oil to do it. Not only are they effective at removing stubborn makeup, but they’ll also impart some gentle hydration.

To really give your skin the hydration it needs, the next step is to apply a moisturizing face cream or serum. Look for one with a light texture, so it can absorb more quickly, and if you can find one with antioxidants, use it. Antioxidants can help firm up your skin and brighten your complexion (and they’re great at soothing the appearance of wrinkles). If your skin needs a little boost throughout the day, reach for a face mist for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up.

Sunscreen is Your Friend in All Seasons

Finland’s weather can turn on a dime, but they see plenty of sunlight, and in the winter, the sun can be especially powerful as it reflects off the snow. If your hydrating cream didn’t already include sunscreen, it’s time to reach for one that does. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight can change the structure of the collagen in your skin, which can contribute to fine or deep wrinkles and a tougher texture.

Vettä is an outdoor spa, so as you prepare for your visit, don’t forget to prepare your skin in the morning with an SPF moisturizer. If you forget it, don’t worry – we’ll have options available for you in our Finnish spa gift shop.

Eat & Live Healthy

A Finnish spa’s secret to that post-spa glow isn’t just our outdoor soaking pools or our signature saunas. It’s that, like the Finns, we know that looking good happens through the holistic care of the body. Everything you do, from what you eat to how you exercise, contributes to how your skin looks and feels.

At Vettä Nordic Spa, our on-site restaurant and bistro will regularly feature dishes with locally-sourced, healthy ingredients, but if you’re ready to go ahead and give your skin a boost on your next shopping trip, here’s what to put in your cart:

  • Sardines – Sure, they might have a mixed reputation where pizza is concerned, but sardines are full of vitamins and fatty acids, which is exactly what your skin needs for hydration and the production of collagen.
  • Wild Salmon – Like sardines, salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, and it also contains selenium, which helps protect your skin from sun damage when you’re outside.
  • Kale – For antioxidants and beta-carotene, you almost can’t do better than kale. Remember earlier when we mentioned how good antioxidants were for your skin? If you can’t find them in a moisturizing cream, kale is a great (and tasty!) alternative way to get them.
  • Walnuts – If you’re not a fan of fish, walnuts also contain the omega-3’s your skin craves, and they’re incredibly versatile to use.

Embrace an Ice Water Plunge

In Finnish culture, one of the most popular ways to cool off after a sauna visit is to plunge into ice-cold water or roll around in the snow. However, ice water also belongs in your morning skincare routine, and you don’t even have to visit an outdoor spa to enjoy it.

When you splash your face with ice water, you’re not just helping yourself wake up and become alert for the day. The cold water helps tighten your pores and smooth your skin out, and it can also quickly banish any residual puffiness from sleep. If your tap doesn’t get cold enough, we recommend keeping a pitcher of water in your refrigerator.

We think it’s one of the best – and cheapest – tricks out there for glowing skin, but only you can decide if you’re ready to take the plunge.

Cleanse With Sauna at a Finnish Spa

Sweating it out in a sauna does more than leave you feeling rejuvenated. The sweating process works by flushing out all the gunk that accumulates in your pores, like toxins and dirt from the day. After you’ve concluded your sauna, your skin will feel healthier, and you’ll also likely notice that it’s less prone to breakouts.

For this last trick, you’ll likely need to visit your favourite outdoor Finnish spa (unless you’re one of the lucky few to have a sauna at home). Vettä Nordic Spa is conveniently located in Horseshoe Valley, Ontario – just a 15-minute drive from Barrie, and only an hour away from Toronto. We’re an outdoor spa, so as you sauna and relax, you’ll be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the surrounding hardwood forest. You won’t just gain clearer skin from your visit; you’ll also discover how it feels to reconnect with yourself.
