Start with a clean face, and try to use a cleansing oil to do it. Not only are they effective at removing stubborn makeup, but they’ll also impart some gentle hydration.
To really give your skin the hydration it needs, the next step is to apply a moisturizing face cream or serum. Look for one with a light texture, so it can absorb more quickly, and if you can find one with antioxidants, use it. Antioxidants can help firm up your skin and brighten your complexion (and they’re great at soothing the appearance of wrinkles). If your skin needs a little boost throughout the day, reach for a face mist for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up.
Sunscreen is Your Friend in All Seasons
Finland’s weather can turn on a dime, but they see plenty of sunlight, and in the winter, the sun can be especially powerful as it reflects off the snow. If your hydrating cream didn’t already include sunscreen, it’s time to reach for one that does. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight can change the structure of the collagen in your skin, which can contribute to fine or deep wrinkles and a tougher texture.

Everything you do, from what you eat to how you exercise, contributes to how your skin looks and feels.

- Sardines – Sure, they might have a mixed reputation where pizza is concerned, but sardines are full of vitamins and fatty acids, which is exactly what your skin needs for hydration and the production of collagen.
- Wild Salmon – Like sardines, salmon is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, and it also contains selenium, which helps protect your skin from sun damage when you’re outside.
- Kale – For antioxidants and beta-carotene, you almost can’t do better than kale. Remember earlier when we mentioned how good antioxidants were for your skin? If you can’t find them in a moisturizing cream, kale is a great (and tasty!) alternative way to get them.
- Walnuts – If you’re not a fan of fish, walnuts also contain the omega-3’s your skin craves, and they’re incredibly versatile to use.
Embrace an Ice Water Plunge
In Finnish culture, one of the most popular ways to cool off after a sauna visit is to plunge into ice-cold water or roll around in the snow. However, ice water also belongs in your morning skincare routine, and you don’t even have to visit an outdoor spa to enjoy it.
When you splash your face with ice water, you’re not just helping yourself wake up and become alert for the day. The cold water helps tighten your pores and smooth your skin out, and it can also quickly banish any residual puffiness from sleep. If your tap doesn’t get cold enough, we recommend keeping a pitcher of water in your refrigerator.
