How To Channel The Nordic Resilience of Sisu

As we’ve mentioned before, “Sisu” is a way of life ingrained in Finnish culture. With an array of weather conditions in Finland, Fins don’t believe in the concept of waiting for the sun to shine to go about their day. Experiencing nature is an integral part of the Finnish lifestyle, whether that means hiking or riding your bike in a snowstorm or taking a dip in an icy lake after a relaxing sauna. Much like life, if you wake up to rainstorms or unfavourable weather, all you can do is prepare the best you can.

Sisu is about persevering despite the challenges in your life. While there is no simple solution for channeling your inner grit or steely determination, here are a few tips to help channel that inner strength and fortitude we know you have!

1. Take Time For Reflection

Being alone with our thoughts, away from distractions, is always beneficial. Whether that means taking time to write in a journal or meditate, it is a way to take a bit of time to press pause on the busyness of life. Taking time to reflect on past events and experiences is a way to develop strength of character. Additionally, meditation harbours numerous benefits, like reducing stress, improving emotion regulation, and increasing self-awareness.

2. Adopt a Problem Solving Approach and Challenge Yourself

We all face various problems and challenges on a daily basis. From mundane decisions like deciding what to wear to larger choices like leaving a job, learning how to navigate these tasks are an essential part of living a happier life. When faced with a problem, trying to find a solution, rather than focusing on a problem is important. For example, let’s say you were determined to get before work and go for a jog in the morning to avoid a workout post-work. You wake up that morning to discover it’s cooler than you expected. Your choices are to bundle up and go for the run anyway or choose a home workout. Trying to make the best of your situation is a significant aspect of Sisu.

Also, you know the saying “do one thing each day that scares you”? Tackling challenges and fears are ways for us to improve our confidence and determination.

3. Spend Time in Nature

Spending some time in the great outdoors allows us to connect with both our mind and body, something that helps to increase our strength of personality and character. Additionally, being outdoors improves our well-being overall. In a study of 20,000 people, it was found that people who spent two hours a week in green spaces reported better health and psychological well-being than those who didn‘t. Spending time in nature gives you an added mental freshness and clarity.

4. Practice Self-Care

Practice looking after both your mind and body. A popular quote says that “you can’t fill from an empty cup” meaning that you can’t give to others if you are running yourself into the ground. By looking after ourselves and listening to our bodies, we prepare ourselves to better handle difficult situations when they arise.

When we open to the public, Vettä Nordic Spa will offer many opportunities for you to channel your inner Sisu. Whether that means taking a plunge into icy water after a sauna or simply trying a day spa for the first time, you will enjoy a Finnish-inspired experience that you will surely love.
