June 20th marked the beginning of the summer solstice, known as the first day of summer. Although, it has felt like summer for a few weeks now.
With many summer events being cancelled and certain social restrictions still in place, many of us are searching for ways to occupy ourselves and uplift our spirits.
Spending time in nature has been popular as of late, such as biking or hiking trails as a physically distant means of entertainment and exercise.
Being outdoors and at one with nature is an integral part of the Finnish lifestyle. In our previous blogs, we’ve talked about how Finnish saunas are a relaxing experience typically enjoyed in tandem with nature.
Much like a sauna provides health benefits, being outdoors does as well. Let’s take a look at how nature benefits our minds, our bodies, and our souls.
It’s an Easy Way to Get Some Exercise
Do you ever find that it’s much easier to go for a run outside rather than sweat it out on a treadmill?
Some may find it easier to complete a workout outside than while being inside. Over the past few months, home workouts have been the norm, but now that the weather has improved, take your workouts outdoors!
Getting some exercise outdoors is often perceived as being easier than working out indoors as well. Surroundings do matter when you are trying to get some physical activity. One study had cyclists pedal in front of green, grey, and red video footage. Cyclists that pedaled in front of the green footage reported less physical exertion and more positive moods. Being out in nature amongst trees and various other greenery can be a welcoming distraction!
It Makes You Healthier
In a study of 20,000 people, it was found that people who spent two hours a week in green spaces reported better health and psychological well-being than those who didn‘t.
Spending time in nature is a natural stress-reliever. It can also lower blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and boost your mood. Also, getting a bit of sunshine gives you some vitamin D, which can help prevent cancer, osteoporosis, and heart attacks. And if you’re tempted to grab another coffee on a Monday morning, try sitting outside for a bit or going out for a walk. Studies show that sitting outside for twenty minutes can give you an energy boost.
It Boosts Mental Clarity
We often stare at our laptops and phones for work and in our personal lives. It’s easy to fall into a bit of a “brain fog,” where we lack motivation, creativity, and focus.
Putting down our devices for a while and taking some time to reconnect with nature and ourselves can be exactly what we need. For more about the importance of taking time to unplug, check out our blog addressing the topic.
Life can be so busy. Getting out in nature gives you the chance to take some time for yourself or spend some time with those you love, away from the distractions and the noisiness of life.
Much like a day at the spa, spending some time outdoors gives you the mental refresh you need.
