Cultivate Calm to Achieve a Better Night’s Sleep

Getting proper sleep on a regular basis is fundamental in leading a healthy, productive life. Good sleep is directly correlated to the state of your emotional, mental and physical well-being. Eating well, exercising and taking time to care for ourselves are imperative to our overall health.

A primary focus at Vettä Spa is taking care and taking time for ourselves. As such, here are some tips on how to get a night of better sleep.

Create an Environment of Calm

The environment where you spend your time sleeping can truly help or hinder how well you sleep. Your bedroom is a place of rest and relaxation and it should stay that way.

Proper measures should be taken to ensure your environment is an optimal sleeping environment. Utilize blinds or blackout curtains so that light won’t interrupt your sleep. If possible, try to limit the amount of sound by drowning out any noise with a fan, sleep casts that you can find on Youtube (like white noise, binaural beats or the sound of rain) or any music that you find soothing. Set the thermostat to 15 to 19 degrees celsius for the optimal room temperature.

Fragrance can be used as a relaxation tool as well. Lavender or peppermint essential oils used in a diffuser at bedtime are a great way of creating an optimal sleep environment.

Eliminate Clutter

Eliminate any clutter to create a space of calm. Clutter has been proven to increase your stress levels and negatively impact all areas of your health. Create a relaxing environment so that you can leave any stress at the door in the evening to slip into a peaceful rest.

Create a Sleep Ritual

Before bed, dim the lights and set the mood for sleep. Our circadian rhythms can be thrown off by bright lights, so opt for warmer, dimmer lights at least 30 minutes before bed.

Make sure you put down your electronics. With many of us working from home these days, you may feel enticed to work from the comfort of your bed or scroll through your phone at night, but this can create a vicious cycle of poor sleep quality leading to decreased productivity due to the blue light. Put away any electronics at least an hour before bed and choose to read, do some light yoga, listen to calm music or journal instead.

Try to maintain as consistent a sleep schedule as possible. Understandably, you may find yourself wanting to sleep in on your days off. Sleeping in an extra hour or two won’t affect your sleep schedule too drastically, but anything beyond that could negatively impact your hard work.

Be Mindful of Daily Activities

You may not realize it, but your habits during the day can impact how well you sleep at night. Consuming too much caffeine, neglecting physical activity and taking long or late naps can impact your sleep.
