There are plenty of ways to bring some Finnish inspiration into your life, whether you're at the spa or not.

4 Inspirational Finnish Sayings You Can Apply to Your Life

In English, there are a lot of common sayings that may sound bizarre but hold life lessons and truth. Sayings such as “throw caution to the wind,” or “you can’t have your cake and eat it too” are used time and time again, but contain valuable life lessons. A part of life is honouring the past while looking towards the future.

As you may know by now, Vettä is a Finnish-inspired Nordic day spa aimed at encouraging people to pause and take time for themselves amid the busyness of daily life.

As we approach our opening day here at Vettä, we want to pay tribute to our Finnish roots as we eagerly look forward to our future ahead. As such, we decided to assemble some common Finnish sayings that will hopefully inspire you to spend your valuable time with us.

Work teaches the worker (Työ tekijäänsä neuvoo)

There are numerous uncertainties in life. Naturally, you’re going to feel apprehensive at the onset of change. Whether you’re moving or starting a new job, change can be uncomfortable but that’s where growth starts. This saying harps on the idea of kindness and patience towards yourself when starting something new. With time, you will gain the knowledge and experience you seek.

Who asks for the road does not get lost (Ei kysyvä tieltä eksy)

We’ve all gotten lost at some point in our lives. Whether yours was literal or metaphorical, did you stop to ask for help? Often, we avoid asking for help out of pride or embarrassment. As a whole, Finnish people try to avoid asking for advice as there is an emphasis on self-sufficiency, so this saying serves as a reminder that it’s okay to ask for help. If you require advice, you should ask for it.

A tree is climbed from its base (Tyvestä puuhun noustaan)

Similar to the English saying “walk before you run,” there’s an emphasis on mastering the basics before trying to learn advanced techniques. In Finland, being outside in nature is an integral part of life, so this saying is not only beautifully worded but suits the Finnish experience.

The brave eats the soup (Rohkea rokan syö)

Similar to “fortune favours the bold,” this proverb refers to the fact that you can’t get ahead in life without some courage. Whether that means trying something new or embarking on an uncertain adventure, bravery will get you farther in life than playing it safe.

Persevering despite life’s challenges isn’t a new concept for the fins. In a previous blog, we talked about the concept of sisu, a Finnish ideology founded on strength and fortitude, which emphasizes persevering despite life’s challenges. Channelling your inner sisu begins with a foundation of bravery.
