For years, people have enjoyed the health benefits of fruit extracts. Now, there are new infusions that combine the great taste of natural extracts with some of the best herbs and spices available.
One of the easiest ways to enjoy fruit flavours while still enjoying all the health benefits of water is to make refreshing infusion water. An infusion water recipe adds a flavorful twist to your usual morning or afternoon meals and makes it much easier to sip something healthy and refreshing in the summer sunshine. Water infusions are famously found at Nordic and Finnish spas, but you don’t have to visit one to enjoy them.
You can make your own, right at home, with real fruits or sugar substitutes, and enjoy the wonderful flavour as much as you enjoy the health benefits of infusions. Today, we’ll explore some of the benefits of water infusions, as well as four recipes inspired by our own Finnish spa and the flavours of Finland.
Health Benefits of Water Infusions
Some of the health benefits of drinking fresh fruits and vegetable-infused water are great news for those of us who want to boost our immune systems. Those who eat more fruits and vegetables will find that they tend to be much healthier, which can lead to a longer life. The minerals found in fresh fruits and veggies also play an important role in maintaining fluid levels in the body. By adding a bit of those good-for-your body fruits and vegetables to your water, you can improve the hydration of your organs and help them fight off illness and stay healthy.
To create delicious infusions, there are a number of easy-to-use recipes that you can whip up using fresh fruit and vegetable ingredients. How to Make a Water Infusion
Making infused water is as easy as filling a pitcher with water, adding in some fruits, vegetables, and herbs, and letting it rest in your refrigerator for 2-3 hours. It tastes best when enjoyed soon after its rest, so pour as many glasses as you like and enjoy!
Finnish Water Infusion Recipes
In Finnish spas, the fruits you’re most likely to find are berries, but Finland also grows apples, pears, cherries, carrots, beetroot, celery, and radishes (just to name a few). We’ve compiled a few water infusion recipes that are sure to help you picture Finland in the summer – right from your very own backyard.
Fresh Apple & Cinnamon
Apple and cinnamon is a flavour combo that you usually only find in the fall, but as an iced water infusion, you might find a whole new love for it as a summertime treat. Slice your apple and add a stick of cinnamon to your water infusion, then let the flavours combine in the fridge. The result is a lightly sweet and subtly spicy chilled drink.
Peach, Plum, and Mint
Dried plums (known as prunes) are a staple ingredient in Finnish baking around the winter holidays, but the fresh fruit has a lot of flavour to offer, too! For this infusion, slice your peach and plum (don’t forget to remove the pits!) and sprinkle in few mint leaves. You can lightly crush the mint leaves first with a spoon or rolling pin to help them release their aromatic oil.
Raspberry & Basil
Raspberries grow wild in Finland, so you’ll find plenty of raspberries on the menu of any Finnish spa. They’re also perfectly suited to facilitate that outdoor spa feeling. For this infusion, add a handful of raspberries to your water, and finish with a few leaves of basil. As with the mint, you may want to lightly crush the leaves first to help them better release their flavour.
Celery, Cucumber, & Lemon
If you’re one of those people who love nothing better than the smell of the air after a rainstorm, this recipe is for you. Slice up some celery, cucumber, and lemon, and let the flavours mingle together in their pitcher. When you take your first sip, you’ll be struck by how refreshing and uniquely crisp the flavour is, making it perfect for enjoying on a particularly hot day.
